Elizabeth (Hubbard) Stiles

1731-1775

Elizabeth Hubbard Stiles, born on July 3, 1731, in New Haven, Connecticut, was the daughter of John Hubbard III and Elizabeth Stevens.

She married Reverend Ezra Stiles on February 10, 1757, in Newport, Rhode Island The couple had eight children, though only five survived into adulthood.

Prior to the British occupation they lived in Newport where Ezra was minister of the Second Congregational Church. After the Revolution Ezra and Elizabeth returned to New Haven. He, once a student at Yale, was now a tutor and rose through the academic ranks to become president. Both his portrait and that of Elizabeth can be seen at Yale.

Stiles who kept detailed literary diaries had this to in her obituary, “she took whole care of the family off me upon herself.”

He also said, “She had considerable medical and chirurgical skill by which she was enabled to do much good. Indeed, when she went among the sick, she relied more on her skill than on many of the Physicians.”
