Patience Greene Brayton

1733–1794

Patience was a notable Quaker minister and social activist from Rhode Island. Born on November 7, 1733, she was the daughter of David Greene and Mary Knowles. She married Preserved Brayton on May 18, 1758, in Rhode Island.

In 1771, Patience embarked on a significant religious journey, traveling through the Middle and Southern States, and later to Great Britain and Ireland in 1783. Her experiences during these travels are detailed in her autobiography, “A Short Account of the Life and Religious Labours of Patience Brayton”.  This account of her journeys can be accessed through a Google book search.
Beyond her religious endeavors, Patience was deeply committed to social justice. She and her husband, Preserved Brayton, are noted for liberating their slaves, reflecting their progressive views on freedom and equality.

Patience Brayton passed away on July 30, 1794, in Swansea, Massachusetts, and is buried in Friends Cemetery in Somerset, Massachusetts.
