Be a Dame and turn the world upside down
as heard by General Cornwallis surrendering to Washington ( 1781) best version is from Maddy Prior on Riseupsing.org

Membership – How does one become part of this?

The National Society of Colonial Dames of America (NSCDA) is a lineage society open to women who are direct descendants of an ancestor (female or male) who rendered government, military, or other significant service to the Colonies before July 5, 1776. The Pennsylvania Society founded the NSCDA in 1891, and Rhode Island joined in 1893.

The NSCDA owns more private museum houses than any other national organization.

Why be a Dame?
Do you have a passion for American history?  Are you intrigued by the puzzles that it presents ? Do you enjoy spirited and engaging conversations   ?    Are you interested in supporting Veterans ?  If you answered yes to any of these, then the Dames may be just the place for you.

The NSCDA actively promotes our national heritage through historic preservation, patriotic service and educational projects. We are an affiliative organization that actively encourages research, thoughtful discussions, and  community outreach.

Our projects are designed to:

  • Encourage citizenship and  promote the study of American history from many perspectives.
  • Support active and veteran military service members in Rhode Island and nationally.
  • Engage in scholarship that leads to greater awareness and understanding of the founding of our country and its relevance in today’s world.

The RI Society’s historical activities enhance and increase our knowledge of preservation through research of portraiture, architecture, publications (print and media), decorative arts and historic textiles, and artifacts. Archival research and maintenance are ongoing at each of the museum houses. Genealogical research allows the Dames to honor the legacies of our ancestors that are foundational to our country’s development.

Rhode Island Society Opportunities and Responsibilities

Members hold events to gather with others interested in preserving our Colonial Heritage. Members offer the opportunity to share knowledge of American history with visitors to the museum houses as well as important artifacts of our shared history.

Responsibilities expected of members include being docents, serving on various committees and participating in special events. Annual dues and appeals provide support for our Rhode Island museum houses; Dumbarton House, our National Headquarters in washing DC; and other historic properties under the care of the National Society.
